St. George was a soldier in Diocletian's army. This emperor hated Christians and had them killed. George was also a soldier of Christ - so he reprimanded Diocletian for his cruelty, then resigned from the Roman army. For this he was tortured and beheaded. His bravery was an inspiration for Christians. He is also revered by soldiers everywhere, and is usually depicted fighting a dragon (which represents the enemies of Christ)
